Bravelands Wiki

Spider is an orphaned baboon who speaks in third-person. Spider also has the ability to master fire. In The Venom Spreads, Spider is revealed to still be alive and the father of Moth.

Appearance[]

Spider has bare, raw skin on his hands, due to often handling fire.[citation needed]

Personality[]

Due to being forced to fend for himself at a young age,

Spider grew up to be eccentric. He also has a tendency to speak in third person. This is shown numerous times when he refers to himself as "Spider" rather than pronouns such as "I" or "me". Spider was also socially inept when it came to being part of a troop. When he was accused of being a spy for Crookedtree Troop he made no attempt to clear his name for he assumed that being accused of espionage was a game to Dawntrees. However, Thorn managed to clear Spider's name and taught Spider proper etiquette in order keep him from getting himself in further trouble. Spider seems to understand the concept of pronouns as when Thorn or another character uses pronouns, Spider is well aware that there referring to themselves even though they aren't named after those respective pronouns. Spider also has a good relationship with Thorn. When Thorn is exiled by Berry in Shifting Shadows, Spider choose to join Thorn rather then remain in Tall Trees even though the former didn't have to. He is also shown to be adaptable in Oathkeeper when he flings a beehive towards Creeper, Viper and Menace to save Thorn. In The Venom Spreads, Spider is revealed to still be nomadic. However he is still in touch with his adopted troop.

Biography[]

Pre-Series[]

Spider didn't live in a troop or know his family while growing up.

He lived alone. He was so young when he lost his mother that he doesn't remember what happened to her. Spider had always been alone as long as he could remember. At one point, he came across a spider and decided to name himself after it because he took a liking to them.

Shifting Shadows[]

Thorn comes across Spider to defend him from a murder accusation. He shows Thorn his fire control, but is caught by Berry Crownleaf's forces, who mistakenly identify him as a Crookedtree spy. Due to his lack of knowledge of Baboon customs, Spider thinks that Dawntrees Troop is playing a game, so he unwittingly makes things worse for himself until Thorn intervenes and points out what Spider did wrong.

The Spirit-Eaters[]

Oathkeeper[]

Near the end of the book, Spider helps Thorn build a ring of fire around the Plain of Our Ancestors, clearing the way for Fearless to fight Titan and drive out the Golden wolves.

The Venom Spreads[]

At the Baboon Forest, Moth reveals to Prance that Spider is her father but unlike her mother, Spider continues to travel the Bravelands befriending other creatures, which was how she was brought up. Bramble and Moonflower encounter Spider later on during their journey to Tall Trees. Spider leads the gorillas into the tunnels where they encounter a float of crocodiles. Spider claims to know the crocs. However bask is less welcoming towards Spider and co. The apes conclude that the crocodiles have been infected by Grandmother. The primates manage to make their way past the crocs and arrive at Tall Trees. However, the trio discover that Thorn Great-Father had been poisoned by a Black Mamba and is currently incapacitated.

Trivia[]
