Prance or Prance Greatmother was a female gazelle, and one of the three main protagonists for the second arc. She was exiled from her herd after she lost her shadow. However, she was able to escape death numerous times. After Gallantpride escorted her to Thorn Greatfather, Prance learned that she wasn't marked for death but was singled out by the Great-Spirit for a special purpose. When Thorn died, he appointed Prance as his successor becoming the next Great-Parent.[1]
In Blood on the Plains, Prance sacrifices her life to save the Bravelands from Grandmother. However her spirit will remain in Bravelands until a new successor is chosen. Eventually, Prance was succeeded by an Elephant named Starlight.

Curse of the Sandtongue[]
Shadows on the Mountain[]
Prance was exiled from Runningherd for losing her shadow, meaning that she was cursed and destined to die. However, she escaped close death many times, and bizarrely could not die. During her exile, Prance traveled alone on the savanna, occasionally mingling with several herds of different species.
At one point she meets Boulder. Boulder takes pity on Prance, and offers her some advice, before parting ways. Later, Prance mentally notes that things are not going her way, despite Boulder's wishes. She later temporarily joins a herd of zebras, and befriends several zebras, including Breezefriend, Grassfriend, and Dawnfriend, and is granted temporary asylum in her herd.
After a traveling with Mistfriendherd for a while, Prance decides that it is time to part ways with the zebras. Alone once again, Prance is found by Gallantpride. They escort her to Great Father Thorn, where she learns that her absence of shadow is not a curse, but a sign that the Great Spirit has an important role for her.

Blood on the Plains[]
Prance walks beside Sky and Gallant as the Strider Family takes Thorn's body. As Prance walks beside them she notices that the place on her chest where Thorn had placed his hand feels warm. She wonders if Thorn had given her the Great Spirit. Prance hasn't found the perfect moment to tell the others what had happened to her before Thorn died. Prance refuses to believe that she is the new Great Parent. Prance joins the Strider Family on their journey and also considers if the Great Spirit is steering her towards the elephants because Sky could be the new Great Parent. After Prance and Gallant say their goodbyes to Thorn before Sky takes him into the graveyard, Gallant asks Prance if she could travel in her shadow form to search for his stolen son, Terror. Prance agrees and enters her shadow form to which she finds Menacepride near the mpaga forest. Prance, seeing Terror with Menace, returns to her body and tells Gallant that his cub is doing fine. Prance asks Sky questions about the Great Spirit and realizes that she can understand skytongue.
