Broken Pride[]
Bark was the Crownleaf at the time of Fearless's arrival to the Brightforest Troop. She allowed Fearless to stay and ordered the rest of the troop to be welcoming. Bark upheld the troop's duties, ceremonies, events, and customs. She was respected by the whole troop.
One day, Fearless walked through the Tall Trees when a larger hyena suddenly attacked him, but Fearless was able to defend himself and warded off the hyena. A few days later Bark was found dead next to the same hyena, her eyes glazed over and half-opened. One of Bark's fangs had been snapped off when she supposedly bit the hyena on the neck. Many came to the conclusion that she had been killed by the hyena, but managed to bring it down before she died. Her fractured and exposed skull was taken by the vultures to have Great Mother examine it. Great Mother told Thorn that Bark was actually betrayed and murdered by a baboon in the Brightforest Troop that she trusted. This confirmed that the hyena was framed by being planted there, as it never attacked Bark in the first place. Grub Highleaf was Thorn's prime suspect of Bark's murder, because he was ruthless, and he might have killed her to pave the way for him to become Crownleaf. This was later proven when false when Grub was also killed after consuming a poisoned dik-dik. Nut Highleaf was the next prime suspect of Bark's murder and Grub's murder. Nut had been harassing the rest of the baboons, especially Thorn and Mud, and he had supposedly taken the poisoned dik-dik from Thorn to give to Grub, making sure that Grub ate the dik-dik. Stinger urged the Council Highleaves to exile Nut, which they eagerly did. The baboons elected Stinger to become the next Crownleaf, because he was well-respected throughout the troop. One day, Thorn was in the Ravine and noticed a trail of tailless scorpions. He recalled that earlier, he and Mud had went to hunt multiple scorpions for Stinger, but then realized that Stinger could have used the poisonous tails to murder Bark and Grub. Thorn appealed to Stinger and questioned if he was responsible for the late Crownleaves' murders. Stinger admitted to his crimes, and said that he was surprised it took Thorn this long to figure it out. Stinger then blackmails Thorn to keep quiet before Stinger paddling away, Thorn decides that he shouldn't rat Stinger out just yet, especially not to Mud or Berry.
